'Harry Potter' Faces Final Shot At MTV Movie Awards Glory

'Deathly Hallows, Part 2,' with six nominations, is up against 'Twilight' and 'Hunger Games' for Movie of the Year.

"The Boy Who Lived, come to thrive?" That could well be the case at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards.

Just as Harry Potter bravely walked through the Forbidden Forest to meet his maker at Voldemort's hands, so too does Team Potter approach its final chance at Golden Popcorn glory come the June 3 broadcast. "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2," the eighth and last film in the Warner Bros. fantasy series, has scored six nominations, including nods for Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson, a Best Kiss nomination for Watson and Rupert Grint, and a coveted shot at Movie of the Year.

Will this be the year "Potter" finally brings that top award home? With a big target out of the way, it just might be.

For years at the Movie Awards, magic has succumbed to bloodsucking in the battle between "Potter" and "Twilight." But with "Breaking Dawn - Part 1" netting only two nominations this year — one for Movie of the Year, another for Best Kiss — the path is considerably clearer for the boy wizard and his companions to make a run at the six awards for which it's nominated. With a reduced "Twilight" presence at this year's show, perhaps the odds are in Harry's favor, to borrow a phrase from another fan-backed franchise.

Then again, besting that franchise — "The Hunger Games," if you're one of two people who didn't catch the reference — could prove trickier than destroying one of He Who Must Not Be Named's Horcruxes for "Potter" fans. Breaking past $600 million at the global box office, "Hunger Games" brings both commercial and critical firepower to this particular race, leading the Movie Awards nominations with eight.

The Jennifer Lawrence-led film managed second place during the MTV Movie Brawl 2012, scoring 1.7 million votes. "Potter" wasn't eligible for that competition, of course, but it's no slouch in the tournament department: Last year, netted more than 7 million votes all told.

Clearly, there are a lot of fans of both franchises, and there's a strong case to be made for both series. For "Potter," it's the end of an era, the last hoorah in one of the most celebrated fantasy stories of all time. For "Hunger Games," it's the beginning of something fantastic and new, an occasion worth honoring.

Will the passion behind the "Potter" finale surpass the passion behind the "Hunger Games" debut, or vice versa? Will the two cancel each other out, leaving the way for a surprise first-place finish from the twice-nominated "Breaking Dawn," the comedy smash "Bridesmaids" or the Oscar-nominated "The Help"?

Whether or not "Potter" trumps "Hunger Games," "Twilight" or any one of its other many rivals is a matter that won't be resolved today. For now, here's what we do know: This is the last opportunity for "Potter" fans to make magic happen at the MTV Movie Awards. If ever there was a time to cast "Accio Golden Popcorn!" that time is certainly now.

Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to vote for your favorite flicks now! The 21st annual MTV Movie Awards air live Sunday, June 3, at 9 p.m. ET.

UK at risk of longer slump as euro crisis hits factories

LONDON (Reuters) - British manufacturing output barely grew at all in April as an economic slowdown in the euro zone curbed demand for goods made in Britain, a survey showed on Tuesday, raising the risk of a longer recession.

The unexpectedly sharp slowdown is fuelling a debate over the chances of further monetary stimulus from the Bank of England (BoE), after central bankers hinted that they might not extend their asset purchases later this month following a run of stronger economic data and sticky inflation.

Sterling fell against the dollar and euro after the PMI release.

The weak Markit/CIPS Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) also cranks up the heat on the governing Conservatives and Liberal Democrats, grappling with a shrinking economy and a series of political blunders as they go into local elections on Thursday, a test of popular support.

The manufacturing PMI dropped to 50.5 in April from a downwardly revised 51.9 in March, keeping the sector just above the 50 level which separates growth from contraction.

"It's all apiece with recent data, which tells us that the economy is weak and likely to remain so for some time," said Peter Dixon, economist at Commerzbank.

The reading, the lowest since December, fell short of economists' forecasts for a dip to 51.5 and lent some credence to disputed official data that showed an economic contraction in Britain in early 2012, tipping the country back into recession.

The Bank and many economists have argued that the official figures understate the economy's true strength, pointing to more upbeat evidence from surveys, including earlier PMIs.

In other quarters the mood is more sombre. The chief executive of British bank Lloyds warned on Tuesday of a "long and difficult" path to economic recovery in Britain.

"We think that the economy will be reasonably flat this year, but it is going to be a long and difficult recovery," Antonio Horta-Osorio said. "We expect it to recover to growth in 2013 and expect unemployment to peak at close to 9 percent by early next year."

The weakness in manufacturing was replicated in Britain's small neighbour Ireland, where growth in the sector almost ground to a halt in March as output fell.

Economic fortunes were better further afield, with China's official PMI rising to a 13-month high in April, signalling that economy has found its footing and may be recovering from a first-quarter trough.

DEPRESSION

Britain's economy has not fully recovered from the steep slump caused by the 2007-2009 financial crisis and is stuck in what some economist already describe as a depression.

British manufacturing output did expand for the fifth consecutive month in April, but it was at the weakest pace since December, partly due to the sharpest fall in new export orders since May 2009, Markit said.

The index measuring overall new orders dropped for the first time since November, with manufacturers blaming sluggish overseas demand and strong competition.

And a strengthening in sterling to its highest in more than two and a half years on a trade-weighted basis poses another threat to exporters by either sapping foreign demand for British wares or squeezing firms' profits via lower prices.

Production of consumer goods fell, while output of intermediate goods, such as car engine, and investment goods, such as factory equipment, both rose.

"It seems that weaknesses in our major trading partner, the euro zone, are starting to hit home, especially for consumer goods producers," said Rob Dobson, senior economist at Markit, which compiles the PMI survey.

Factory-gate price inflation reached a seven-month high, even though manufacturers' costs rose at a much slower pace than in March.

The signs of slower growth but higher output prices will compound the central bank's dilemma over quantitative easing.

Most economists do not expect another round of QE after the current one runs out this week, although the surprise fall in GDP has raised the prospect of the bond-buying being extended.

Just-Eat Just Raised Another $64M From Vitruvian, Index, Greylock For Online Food Ordering

just eat logoThe UK may have just entered a double-dip recession but that doesn't seem to have trickled down to how consumers are spending money on take-out food -- and the companies that are building businesses around that. The UK-based online food ordering site Just-Eat has picked up a third round of funding totaling $64 million, its biggest yet, to further build out its online food ordering service. The round was led by private equity firm Vitruvian Partners, with participation from existing investors Index Ventures, Greylock Partners and Redpoint Ventures. The investment comes only a year after the company raised a venture round of $48 million, and a Series A of $17.4 million in 2009, and brings the total funding in the company up to a whopping $129.4 million in the last three years.

Pessimisting Airplane GPS Always Knows the Best Place to Land in an Emergency [Video]

A company called Vertical Power has created a GPS-based co-pilot for smaller private planes that's constantly worried about the worst-case-scenario when flying. But that's a good thing, since in the event of an emergency like an engine failure, it already knows the nearest and safest place to land. More »
