Sony Fined Nearly $400,000 By U.K. Data Protection Watchdog For 2011 PlayStation Network Hack
Sony has been fined by the U.K.'s data protection watchdog for the April 2011 data breach of the PlayStation Network which compromised the personal details of millions of users. Obama names new White House chief of staff in shake-up
Obama is expected to detail the personnel changes at 12:10 p.m. in the East Room of the White House, the aide said on condition he not be named. The choice of McDonough to succeed Jack Lew, who has been nominated to be treasury secretary, confirms a pattern of the president picking trusted, long-time advisors?and not outsiders?for key posts.
McDonough, 43, has been with Obama since the then-senator first came to Washington a decade ago. JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? Calling all crocodile experts ? South African police say you're needed to help capture thousands of crocs out on the lam.
Thousands of crocodiles escaped a breeding farm along a river on the South Africa-Botswana border when the farms' gates were opened earlier this week to alleviate pressure caused by rising flood waters.
Efforts are now being made to wrangle the reptiles and get them back to the Rakwena Crocodile Farm, from where the vast majority escaped. Hangwani Mulaudzi, a spokesman for the police in Limpopo Province, said Friday that experts are needed right away to help sort out the crocodile crisis.
"Due to the number of crocodiles that have been washed away there is a need for expertise, people who have expertise to come and assist," Mulaudzi said. "So we are just making appeals to anyone ... who has knowledge of catching crocodiles to come and assist."
News reports from the scene show people hunting down smaller crocodiles at night, tying them up and taking them back to the Rakwena Crocodile Farm in northern South Africa. The crocodiles are easier to hunt at night because their eyes glow when hit with a beam of light. The farm's website shows crocs up to 5 meters (16 feet) long, though crocs of all sizes escaped, Mulaudzi said.
It isn't clear exactly how many crocodiles are on the loose. Mulaudzi said he believes around 10,000 from multiple farms remain on the loose. Officials from the Rakwena Crocodile Farm have been quoted in conflicting South African media accounts as saying either 7,000 escaped or up to 15,000 escaped. The farm originally held about 15,000 crocs. About 2,000 crocodiles have been returned to the farm, Mulaudzi said.The farm did not respond to an email or calls seeking comment.
Regardless of the exact number of farm-raised crocs now touring the wild, government officials and experts are calling on people who live near the remote region, which sits on the Limpopo River, to be careful around bodies of water. Many of the crocodiles are assumed to now be residing in the river.
"So far we are lucky. There has not been any emergencies," said Mulaudzi. "And we are hopeful that nothing will happen. But with crocodiles all over in the river we are saying, please, we need assistance."
Donald Strydom, a wildlife expert at South Africa's Khamai Reptile Centre, said he doesn't think the croc release will lead to a loss of human life. People are aware of the situation, he said, and crocodiles don't naturally hunt humans.
"People must not go into a monster hunt and think these crocodiles are out to eat them," Styrdom told South Africa's eNews Channel Africa.
Mulaudzi said he did not think the Rakwena Crocodile Farm would face any charges from police for releasing the crocs, given the emergency nature of the flood. Flood waters are inundating northern South Africa and neighboring Mozambique. But Mulaudzi said the farm may face scrutiny from the Department of Environmental Affairs, which is helping with the reptile emergency.
The Rakwena Crocodile Farm website shows goods like crocodile-skin purses, belts and hats for sale. Crocodile meat is also available for purchase.

Facebook's Plan To Kill The Tracking Cookie - Business Insider
Facebook product manager David Baser gave a nice, detailed interview to AdExchanger in which he revealed that Facebook has a plan that, if successful, will make the infamous tracking cookie look like a second class relic of history.
Cookies are the little bits of code that advertisers drop onto web users' browsers in order to follow them around the web and target them with relevant ads. They don't identify users specifically, but they do identify your interests based on the sites you look at.
Facebook, however, is working on something much more targeted. Baser calls it "Optimized CPM." (Cost per thousand, or "mille," is a standard ad-pricing measurement.)
OCPM is so simple (in principle), it's brilliant. Facebook knows that users who log in mostly forget to log out, and thus they can be tracked around the web all day, especially if they interact with those "like" buttons that many non-Facebook web pages have installed (like the one on top of this page).
The difference between cookies and Facebook user IDs, Baser says, is that cookies are anonymous and don't really know who you are, whereas your Facebook user ID is actually you. Also, your Facebook ID follows you easily from your phone to your laptop and back. Cookies can't do that.
In plain English, it means that private, untracked web browsing will become a thing of the past for anyone who forgets to log out of Facebook.
By targeting ads at the user IDs, Facebook can find out which users are more likely to buy things than others. Those users can then be grouped together and targeted with ads. Those audiences have much greater conversion rates -- ie sales generated -- than with cookie targeting, Baser believes. This is called "Conversion Measurement," and when it's linked to OCPM, advertisers will come regard the cookie as the poor cousin of web advertising, Baser hints.
It's important to note that advertisers won't know that they're targeting "you" specifically with ads. Just that facebook's algorithms have grouped your account into a pool with similar behavior that can be targeted. The system will be anonymous, in other words, even though it's based on your actual Facebook identity.

"The key difference is that other conversion measurement systems rely on dropping cookies on the users when they see or click on the ad. We understand who the user is regardless of whether they?re logged into Facebook on the app or on the mobile phone."

I have found the most magical, enchanting resort in the Northeast. A resort designed as a return to the Adirondack Great Camp, nestled in the woodlands surrounding Lake Placid, New York.?

Between the majestic Adirondack landscape and the rustic timber design, The Whiteface Lodge will leave you breathless.?
My partner and I had the pleasure of experiencing this resort in early December, which only adds to its fairy-tale allure.?
Decked out in holiday decor, complete with Christmas trees large enough to make Clark Griswold jealous, the resort gleamed with twinkling lights, red bows and the scent of fresh pine and wood burning fireplaces.
The ambiance and musical sounds of holiday classics playing softly in the hotel?s lobby would make even the Grinch want to sip hot cocoa and don his favorite ski sweater!
As a person who truly appreciates each and every detail of a place, my senses were completely overjoyed.?

Your experience begins the second you pull up and are greeted by the friendly valet attendants.
As you walk toward the main entrance you can?t help but feel a sense of excitement take over.
This excitement is founded because the second you step inside I assure you that a permanent smile will appear, well, until you have to leave that is (but hey, cheer up, you can always return)!?
Our check-in process was smooth and informative and before we knew it we were heading to our superior suite, room # 122.?

I always feel like a kid on Christmas morning as I get ready to enter a hotel room. ?Here goes,? I said to my partner, Jennifer!?
The suite was absolutely gorgeous with plushly furnished, handcrafted Adirondack-style furnishings.
The superior suite measures approx 600-700 square feet. It offers two rooms, a separate bedroom and living room.
The bedroom features an elegant king bed while the living room provides a queen sleeper sofa. The bathroom has a jetted tub / rain head shower combination.?

There was a full kitchen with stove, microwave, refrigerator, dishwasher and utensils.?
Another fantastic, and much appreciated amenity, is the in-room washer/dryer.?
?
Some personal favorites were the cast-iron (gas) fireplace and private cedar-mahogany deck entrance from the living room.?
?

Oh, and did I mention the bathroom has radiant-heat flooring? Oh. Yes.?
?
There were plush, terry cloth robes laid out on our bed and 2 giant chocolate-chip cookies on a nightstand.?
Also provided was a list of activities / events planned at the resort that day.

Jen and I decided to venture out and tour the premises. We found ourselves in their family room, complete with a movie theater and 2-lane bowling alley (yes, a bowling alley)!?
The resort is over-flowing with amenities including the above mentioned family room which also has billiards, shuffleboard, air hockey and foosball tables.?

There is a year-round, heated indoor/outdoor swimming pool, outdoor hot tub,
