Douglas Frantz, Washington Post National Security Editor, Takes Leave To Consider Government Job

NEW YORK ?- Douglas Frantz, the national security editor for the Washington Post, is considering taking a job with the State Department and is currently on leave from the paper, according to newsroom sources.

A Post spokeswoman confirmed that Frantz is on leave, but declined to comment further. Frantz did not respond to The Huffington Post's requests for comment on his office, cell and home phone numbers. He did not respond to multiple email requests.

This wouldn't be the first time Frantz left journalism for government work.

After over three decades as an investigative reporter and high-ranking editor at publications like the New York Times, Los Angeles Times and Chicago Tribune, Frantz took a position as an investigator for the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, chaired by then-Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.).

In that position, Frantz?s duties ?- such as working on a public report on Iran?s nuclear program -? weren?t too dissimilar from his work as an investigative journalist. He then worked for nine months at consulting firm Kroll.

Frantz then returned to journalism last year as the Post?s national security editor.

"I don?t think of it as the other side," Frantz told HuffPost last year about his work in government. "I thought of it as two-and-a-half years of public service. I was happy and honored to work for the Foreign Relations Committee. It wasn't political. It was honorable work. I was glad to do that, but I'm absolutely passionate about this."

At least one other prominent journalist has already taken a government job this year. Boston Globe editor Glen Johnson took a senior staff position in the State Department following Kerry?s appointment as Secretary of State.

Mobile Helix launches HTML5 platform - Computer Business Review

Duncan Macrae Published 21 June 2013

Mobile Helix, the enterprise application and data security platform provider, has launched Link, which it describes as the industry?s first pure HTML5 platform.

Link unlocks enterprise productivity by combining unparalleled security for enterprise data; a unique, open HTML5 application development and delivery platform; and breakthrough patent-pending performance enhancement technology.

Link is designed with data security rather than device security at its core, delivering unparalleled security irrespective of the endpoint. The technology bridges the fixed/mobile application divide by allowing any existing or new browser-based enterprise application to be deployed across multiple device types, including mobile devices, PCs and laptops. Link supports iOS and Android now, and will support Windows 8, Mac OSX and Blackberry 10 later this year.

Link embraces HTML5 and extends the standard to meet the most exacting set of enterprise requirements, including data security, device capability integration and performance optimization. HTML is the most commonly used development platform within enterprises, meaning companies using Link do not have to invest in any additional skills or infrastructure to enable secure mobility across their business.

Seth Hallem, CEO of Mobile Helix, said: "Link is designed with unrestricted enterprise productivity at its core. It is the first product on the market to combine the unmistakable benefits of device-independent applications built using HTML5, with a disruptive data security platform that ensures sensitive corporate data is safe on any device.

"We believe the notion that fixed and mobile applications require different development, delivery and security solutions is fundamentally flawed. Enterprises don't have the time or budget to simply throw out years of investment in standards-based IT and take a completely new, and often proprietary, approach to mobility. IT needs a unified strategy for building new apps and converting existing ones, while still ensuring data is protected under any circumstance and on any computing device. Link achieves this goal without requiring complicated and costly new infrastructure or expertise."

Link is constructed with optimised data security, rather than device security at its core. This is a fundamental shift in the enterprise security model that leverages unique features of both mobile operating systems and modern browser technology. The result is a more robust, yet simpler, security system than existing PC-based and mobile-device-based solutions. Link achieves this without placing any restrictions or limitations on the devices used. Even when devices are 'rooted' or 'jailbroken', Link ensures that corporate data is not at risk. Link includes a secure container on the device, fully device-independent encryption of all data in motion and at rest, a sophisticated key management architecture that ensures encrypted data remains safe, and a comprehensive policy engine that allows IT to enforce policies on applications and data rather than on devices.

Maribel Lopez, founder and principal analyst of Lopez Research, commented: "Contrary to popular opinion, mobile operating systems aren't necessarily less secure than PC operating systems. A tablet or smartphone with the right data security posture can be as, if not more, secure than a typical corporate laptop. PCs are perceived to be safe because of the numerous security 'band aids' that are applied to them, such as anti-virus, full-disk encryption, DLP and network access control."

Link creates a common application environment by deploying applications through Internet browsers, embracing standards-based technology to deliver an open, end-to-end solution. This, in turn, extends existing enterprise application development, delivery infrastructure and expertise to mobile devices. Link integrates with existing IT processes and infrastructure to enable a simplified 'download free' application delivery and support model, removing the need for a separate enterprise app store, app catalogue, and dedicated distribution and update processes for every different application and mobile operating system.

Lopez added: "For employees to be effective in their roles, critical enterprise data and applications must flow unrestricted across devices and networks. The power of mobility is clear, yet the enterprise mobility market today is crowded and confusing. Firms need mobile solutions that can integrate with existing enterprise infrastructure."

US: Taliban must show good faith in Afghan talks

DOHA, Qatar (AP) ? The Taliban signaled a willingness to meet demands to keep their flag lowered as the U.S. warned Saturday that their newly opened political office in Qatar might have to be closed as talks aimed at ending nearly 12 years of war in Afghanistan remained in limbo.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said the ball was in the Islamic militant movement's court, urging the Taliban to step back from the brink and begin what he called the "difficult" road ahead. He said the main U.S. envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan was in Doha and "waiting to find out whether the Taliban will respond."

The Taliban's office opened Tuesday to much fanfare and a simultaneous announcement that U.S. officials would begin formal talks with Taliban representatives, which eventually would be joined by the Afghan government raised hopes that the long-stalled peace process aimed at ending Washington's longest war could finally begin. But it ran into trouble from the outset when Afghan President Hamid Karzai temporarily withdrew from talks to protest the Taliban's use of its old flag and a sign bearing the name of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, which the movement used during its five-year rule that ended in 2001 with the U.S.-led invasion.

After intervention from the Qatar government, the flag was lowered and the sign changed to the "Political Bureau of the Taliban Afghan in Doha." Both the U.S. and the Qataris said the Taliban had agreed on the pre-approved name but violated the pact at the ribbon cutting ceremony.

A Taliban spokesman in Doha, Shaheen Suhail, suggested the Taliban were willing to move forward despite "much anger" among some members over the removal of the name and the lowering of the Taliban flag ? a white flag emblazoned with a Quranic verse in black.

"In the past 12 years, the opening of the political office is the first ray in the direction of peace in Afghanistan," Suhail said. "Those who want real peace in the county should support this move. These are the first days. There should not be high expectations to see everything resolved in one day, nor should there be disappointments."

He told The Associated Press in a telephone call that the U.S. had not contacted the Taliban yet to discuss a meeting.

James Dobbins, U.S. special envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan, arrived in Doha on Saturday.

Kerry, in the Qatari capital for separate talks on Syria's civil war, said the Americans and the Afghan government's High Peace Council were ready, and he encouraged the Taliban to remain in the process.

"Nothing comes easily in this endeavor, we understand that. The road ahead will be difficult, no question about it, if there is a road ahead," he said at a press conference, adding "it's really up to the Taliban to make that choice."

"It remains to be seen in this very first test whether or not the Taliban are prepared to do their part," he said.

Suhail for the first time suggested the Taliban were willing to discuss a cease-fire, as well as the presence of U.S. troops in Afghanistan to train Afghan security forces after the end of the NATO combat mission in 2014. He even agreed to the rights of women being on the table, a nod to fears among women, mostly in Afghanistan's cities, that the Taliban would reinstate restrictive rules such as the mandatory wearing of the all- encompassing burqa. While most women in Afghanistan still wear the burqa, it was law during the Taliban rule. They also did not allow girls to attend school, which they have also backed away from.

"Yes there should be a cease-fire but first you have to talk about how to reach a cease-fire. How can it be done in one day?" he asked. "It can be part of the agenda and discussed, also foreign troops in Afghanistan can be part of the agenda, the general concern of the Afghan people, of the Afghan women can all be part of the agenda. It is only when this process goes forward can we make progress."

The Taliban earlier said they have agreed to free U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl ? a 27-year-old Hailey, Idaho, native who was captured four years ago June 30 in Afghanistan ? in exchange for five Taliban prisoners being held in the U.S. prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

In Kabul, a member of the government's negotiation team said it was still prepared to begin talks in Qatar and called the removal of the sign and flag was a positive sign.

High Peace Council member Shahzada Shahid said it was too early to say when members of the council would travel to Qatar for talks. "Peace is very important and vital for us so we will take all measures for it," he said.

Meanwhile on the battlefield, 18 Taliban militants were killed Saturday when they attacked a local security post in northern Afghanistan, sparking fighting that also left two Afghan policemen dead, Afghan officials said.

A militant attack also killed a coalition service member in the south on Saturday, NATO said. The statement did not provide a nationality or further details.

Heavy reassessment

One in three U.S. adults is obese, as are many children and teens. The excess flab puts them at elevated risk for a range of life-threatening diseases, from cancer to diabetes.

Credit: iStockphoto

On June 18, the American Medical Association?s House of Delegates signed off on a statement arguing that obesity is a disease. It said that obesity ? the condition of being excessively overweight ? meets all of AMA?s criteria for defining a disease. These criteria include impairing normal functions of the body, having characteristic signs or symptoms and leading to harm or poor health.

Some people have argued that obesity is not a disease but just the unhealthy result of lifestyle choices to eat too much and to exercise too little. But the new AMA policy statement rejects that idea. It states that such an attitude makes as little sense as ?suggesting that lung cancer is not a disease because it was brought about by individual choice to smoke cigarettes.?

Helena Bonham Carter Joins Kenneth Branagh's Cinderella

AP

It's hard to imagine Helena Bonham Carter starring in anything but a fantasy or period piece, or a cross-over of the two.

Disney revealed today that our favorite female Death Eater will once again flick a wand, but this time using magic for good as the fairy godmother in the upcoming live-action "Cinderella." Kenneth Branagh's adaptation of the classic fairy tale will also star Lily James of "Downton Abbey" in the title role, an evil Cate Blanchette as the wicked stepmother, and Richard Madden of "Games of Thrones" as Prince Charming.

Bonham Carter seems a perfect fit for the role, having been cast as one bizarre, fantastical character after another -- from the Red Queen to Bellatrix Lestrange to Mrs. Lovett. Yet we wonder if she will ever tone things down and return to her simpler roots, ? la Marla Singer.

No release date for the "Cinderella" reboot has been announced yet, but filming is reported to begin this fall in London.

  • ?Cinderella II and III? (2002)

Fifty-two years after Cinderella lost her glass slipper, Disney released the first of two sequels to the romance classic. In 2002?s "Cinderella II: Dreams Come True," Jaq the mouse is turned into Cinderella?s human pageboy and one of her evil stepsisters falls in love with a low-class man. In "Cinderella III: A Twist in Time," from 2008, Cinderella?s wicked stepmother gets ahold of the Fairy Godmother?s wand and goes back in time to when Cinderella tried on the slipper (uh oh).

  • ?Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World? (1998)

Disney has a poor track record of re-telling American history, so why not make a ?Pocahontas? sequel and continue to get her story wrong? The follow up to the 1995 movie tells a Disney-friendly version of Pocahontas?s life in England and how she meets and marries John Rolfe (a tobacco farmer in real life, but diplomat in the movie). The movie ends with John Smith confessing his love to Pocahontas (in real life, he betrayed his promise to her and her father), and Pocahontas sailing off happily with husband Rolfe (in real life, she died soon after). Disney always has to romanticize everything -- and confuse the heck out of kids.

  • ?Return to Never Land? (2002)

Although many ?Peter Pan? live-action reboots and sort-of sequels have been made by other studios, Disney decided to go back to Neverland themselves in 2002. This theatrically released follow-up takes place during World War II, as Wendy?s daughter Jane is kidnapped by Captain Hook. Surprisingly, this film actually opened in third place.

  • ?Mulan II? (2005)

Things ended just fine in 1998?s ?Mulan? when the titular character returned home and Li Shang stayed for dinner. But Disney had to keep going of course, and in the movie?s 2004 sequel Li Shang finally asks Mulan to marry him. The film follows the couple as they escort the Emperor's daughters to meet their new fiances. While described as a continuation of the first film?s ?epic adventure,? after fighting the Huns, everything else seems utterly boring.

  • ?The Jungle Book 2? (2003)

?The Jungle Book 2? is one of the very few Disney sequels to be released theatrically before going to video, most likely because it features the voices of Haley Joel Osment and John Goodman. In this movie, Mowgli returns to the jungle -- but nothing really happens, as he ends up back in the Man Village at the end anyway (well, that was pointless).

  • ?Bambi II? (2006)

Sixty-four years after the 1942 classic, Disney returned to the sad motherless deer in the woods. The sequel (or, technically, midquel) takes place during the gap of time in the original, after Bambi?s death and before he grows up. While the film was a direct-to-video release in most countries, it was -- oddly enough -- theatrically released in Argentina.

  • ?An Extremely Goofy Movie? (2000)

We all remember 1995?s ?A Goofy Movie? where Max is forced to go on a chaotic road trip with his father. As if Goofy didn?t embarrass Max enough in the first movie, this time he goes way too far. After Max heads to college, Goofy loses his job and must return to school to finish up his degree. Obviously, he enrolls at his son?s school. No one wants their college fun spoiled by dad.

  • ?Stitch! The Movie? and More ?Lilo & Stitch? Sequels

?Lilo & Stitch? became a giant franchise after the original 2002 film. The sequels first kicked off with 2003?s direct-to-video ?Stitch! The Movie,? followed by a spin-off TV series, then direct-to-video ?Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch? in 2005, and finally 2006?s ?Leroy & Stitch." Who knew the little blue alien would prove to be so popular?

  • ?The Return of Jafar? and More ?Aladdin? Sequels

That?s right -- Disney ventured back into Aladdin?s Arabian Nights adventures twice, including ?The Return of Jafar? in 1994 and ?Aladdin and the King of Thieves? in 1996. Although Robin Williams didn?t voice the Genie in the first sequel due a contract dispute with Disney, he returned as our favorite wish-granter in ?King of Thieves.?

  • ?Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas? and More Sequels

Belle and the Beast return twice in both "Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas" in 1997 and "Beauty and the Beast: Belle's Magical World" in 1998, both of which went straight to video. In the Christmas movie, the Beast turns into a Scrooge by not wanting to celebrate the holiday. The second sequel tells a series of stories each with a different moral. Who better to learn life lessons from than a bunch of humans turned into objects for their bad deeds?

  • ?The Little Mermaid II? and Prequel

Poor Ariel finally escaped the terrors of the sea in the 1989 classic film, but Disney just had to toss her back in with the fish. In 2000?s ?The Little Mermaid II: Return to Sea,? Ariel and Eric?s daughter swims into some dark waters and gets tangled up with Morgana, Ursula?s sister. But that wasn?t enough so Disney dove back in with ?The Little Mermaid: Ariel?s Beginning? in 2008 to recount the origin story of the young mermaid.

  • ?Lady and the Tramp II: Scamp's Adventure? (2001)

The 1955 classic about puppy love gets dug up again in Disney?s 2001 sequel, which follows Lady and Tramp?s only son pup Scamp. To no one's surprise, Scamp turns out to be more like his father. In the film, he runs away from his family to be a wild dog and join a gang of junkyard dogs. Sometimes you can?t take the mutt out of the pup.

  • ?101 Dalmatians II: Patch's London Adventure? (2003)

You probably remember Disney?s live-action remake and sequel of ?101 Dalmatians."?As if those both weren't enough they decided to make an animated sequel as well. "101 Dalmatians II: Patch's London Adventure" follows Patch, one of the pups, who gets left behind on his family?s moving day.

Heed the evidence: Cops need more than common sense

THE fight against crime is like a bottomless pit, one into which we could keep throwing resources without ever noticing much difference. That is an especially big problem now that police departments around the world are being forced to make cuts in the wake of the global recession. The squeeze on police budgets will worry many of us, yet there are those who see it as an opportunity.

"There's nothing quite like 30 per cent less funding to drive innovation and a desire to do things differently," says Peter Neyroud at the University of Cambridge's Institute of Criminology. A former chief constable of one of the UK's regional police forces, Neyroud is an ardent advocate of evidence-based policing ? the idea that policing strategies should be guided by research into which crime prevention and detection measures work best. Until now, few police forces have shared his enthusiasm. But as cuts ...

DENIED! Outrage after feds reject Sandy flood claims | PIX 11

MANASQUAN, N.J. (PIX11) ? Eight months later and many Sandy damaged homes are practically untouched since the storm because people are still waiting to get their insurance money to rebuild.

Now, PIX11 News has learned, thousands of people are being blindsided with denials even though they have foundation damage that is clearly caused by flood waters from Sandy.

And it is not their private for-profit insurance companies doing this to them. It is the federal government.

?This is a section of the foundation where it broke apart and cracked all the way down through the footings and shifted,? explained Dina Sass, a homeowner in Manasquan, N.J.

Like most homeowners who live near the water, Sass gets her flood insurance through the federal government?s National Flood Insurance Program.

?When you buy into a policy that is backed by the government, you think it?s solid,? said Sass.

That is why she was shocked when her claim on the foundation damage was denied.? The reason, said the insurance program, was that the damage was directly caused by earth movement.? The denial went on to say ?we do not insure loss of property caused directly by earth movement even if the movement is caused by flood.?

Sass said:? ?A flood policy, hmmm, and they exclude something that is caused by a flood?? It is incredible.?

The same government program is also requiring elevation in order to insure properties in the future.

?We are required to raise our house another four feet, whole new foundation, how pay for that?? It?s an incredible amount of cost,? said Sass.

A cost that could be more than $100,000 ? and it would all be out of pocket.

?It?s so wrong in every way,? said longtime public adjuster Dave Charles, who says the Sass? house is undeniably damaged.? He adds that thousands of people like the Sass family are dealing with denials on their foundation damage from the federal government.

?Every aspect of that policy is written by Congress,? said Charles who thinks Congress made a mistake in recent years when they rewrote the policy and now it?s having unintended consequences on those slammed by Sandy.

?I can?t allow myself to believe that they are heinous enough to do this on purpose to so many people?? he said.

The federal insurance program says every homeowner can appeal a denial.

This claim denial problem may well take an act of Congress to fix.

?You?re talking about years and years from now and meanwhile I have three little kids, a sick husband and no house,? said Sass, shaking her head.

PIX 11 reached out to the National Flood Insurance Program through FEMA?s regional office in New York.

They told us they know about this concern but they are ?not in a position to comment,? and said to get in touch with the D.C. office.

PIX11 hasn?t heard back from them.

Bill BelichickAP

Coaches always will be tempted to take risks when the reward is winning.? Successful coaches find themselves having far greater license to do it.

For Patriots coach Bill Belichick, three Super Bowl wins in four years and the ongoing presence of one of the best quarterbacks in NFL history have empowered him to take chances.? After all, Belichick isn?t and for the foreseeable future won?t be on the hot seat.

And if he?d ever get fired by the Patriots, someone else would be willing to hire him immediately.

Hints of a greater willingness to embrace risk came in 2007, with the drafting of safety Brandon Meriweather in round one, and the trade that brought receiver Randy Moss to New England from Oakland.? Meriweather kicked an opponent in the head during an on-field fight at the University of Miami, and Moss?s tombstone will (or at least should) read, ?I played when I wanted to play.?

The habit accelerated in 2010, with the two-tight-end dice-roll on Rob Gronkowski (round two; back problems) and Aaron Hernandez (round four; failed drug tests).? Both looked great through their first two seasons.

In 2011, Belichick took risk-taking to a higher level, using a third-round pick on much-maligned quarterback Ryan Mallett and then, after the lockout, sending mid-round picks to the Redskins and Bengals, respectively, for defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth and receiver Chad Ochocinco.? That same year, the Pats spent a fifth-round pick on Marcus Cannon, an offensive lineman who was diagnosed with cancer in the weeks preceding the draft.

In 2012, a seventh-round flier was taken on cornerback Alfonzo Dennard, who was charged with assaulting a police officer only days before the draft.? During the 2012 season, Belichick traded for cornerback Aqib Talib, a former first-rounder who had more than a few off-field predicaments in Tampa.

Then came the unexpected (but in hindsight brilliant) waiver claim on tight end Jake Ballard (ACL) and, most recently, a trade for running back LeGarrette Blount and the decision to bring Tebowmania to town.

It?s not that Belichick is harboring reputed bad guys.? Instead, he?s generally buying low ? whether due to injures, health problems, off-field issues, or perceived distractions from a nationwide army of fanatics and the overly zealous media horde trying to serve them.

In some cases, Belichick?s willingness to take risks has worked.? In other cases, it hasn?t.? For some players, it worked initially but then went the other way.

Regardless, Belichick has opted to take risks because he?s far more focused on cementing a legacy than keeping his job.? While it has yet to deliver a fourth Super Bowl win, there?s no reason to change, because he won?t be on the hot seat any time soon, if ever.

Study of insect bacteria reveals genetic secrets of symbiosis

June 20, 2013 ? Mealybugs only eat plant sap, but sap doesn't contain all the essential amino acids the insects need to survive. Luckily, the bugs have a symbiotic relationship with two species of bacteria -- one living inside the other in a situation unique to known biology -- to manufacture the nutrients sap doesn't provide.

The net result: The bacteria get a comfy mealybug home, and the bugs get the nutrition they need to live.

University of Montana microbiologist John McCutcheon describes such mutually beneficial relationships used to solve life's little problems as "almost hilariously complicated. But animal-bacterial relationships are extremely common in nature, and it's my goal in life to help people understand that it's normal."

McCutcheon and his research partners recently delved deeper into the genes involved in the "tripartite nested mealybug symbiosis," and their work was published in the June 20 issue of Cell, a scientific journal. The researchers discovered the already complex three-way symbiosis actually depends on genes from six different organisms -- three more than the number of species that currently exist in the symbiosis.

Tremblaya princeps is the larger of the two bacteria species living within special organs inside mealybugs. Tremblaya houses the smaller bacterial species, Moranella endobia, within its cytoplasm. But what makes Tremblaya truly odd is the size of its genome, or genetic code. With only 120 genes, its genome is the smallest known and smaller than many scientists consider necessary for life. By comparison, common E. coli bacteria have about 4,200 genes and humans have about 21,000.

"We wanted to discover how this genome got so small," McCutcheon said. "We suspected Tremblaya's genome may have gotten smaller by transferring genes to the host animal, which is called horizontal transfer."

The researchers looked for genes in the mealybug genome that resemble bacteria genes. However, after extensive analysis they only found one weak possibility for horizontal transfer from Tremblaya.

"Our hypothesis that Tremblaya was transferring genes to the host was dead wrong," said McCutcheon. They did, however, find 22 other bacterial genes mixed in with the mealybug code -- genes that seem to support activities missing in Tremblaya, Moranella and the mealybug.

How can this be?

"The genes are probably from historical bacterial infections," McCutcheon said. "These bacteria are no longer present in the mealybugs we work with, but their horizontally transferred genes are, and these genes allow the symbiosis to work."

The research team also examined a strain of Tremblaya that doesn't have Moranella living inside it. This variety employs about 50 more genes than the one containing Moranella, which strongly suggests Moranella plays a key role in allowing the insect-dwelling Tremblaya to operate with such a tiny genome.

McCutcheon said Tremblaya, with its shrinking genome, in many ways resembles organelles called mitochondria -- tiny structures found within all plant and animal cells that scientists believe started out as symbiotic bacteria in the early history of life. The mealybug/bacteria relationship he studies may illustrate one pathway bacteria take in becoming essential and highly integrated components of other cells.

"So this research really touches on some fundamental questions of the origin of life," he said. "It's exciting to see if we can get some insight into the origin of organelles."

McCutcheon said this study involved an international cast of 12 collaborators. Filip Husnik, the study's lead author, is a Czech doctoral student from the University of South Bohemia who worked in McCutcheon's UM lab. Other team members were from Japan, England, California, Utah and Florida.

The study was funded by a $529,000 grant from the National Science Foundation.

"Our work illustrates how an animal's interactions with bacteria can drive hidden organismal complexity," McCutcheon said. "A tree is more than a tree, and an animal is more than an animal. They are really mosaics of plants and animals and bacteria all working together."
