USA Today Poll: Alabama tops NCAA football preseason coaches rankings

Receiving 58 of 62 first-place votes, the Alabama Crimson Tide open the 2013 NCAA football preseason as the No.1 team in the country according to the USA Today Poll?s coaches rankings.

With three first-place votes, the Ohio State Buckeyes, the team that many people predict will give Bama the biggest challenge this season comes in at No.2 in the polls. OSU is followed by (3) Oregon, (4) Stanford, (5) Georgia and (6) Texas A&M.

It comes as no surprise that half of the teams on the USA Today top 10 Poll are part of the ultra-competitive Southeastern Conference. The SEC is responsible for winning the last seven BCS National Championships, mostly due to the fact that Nick Saban has captured three of the last four with Alabama.

The fact that this team has 12 starters returning from last season?s championship team certainly justifies the fact that so much cash is raking in from so many people wagering on Alabama.

The truth is that this will be one of, if not the most balanced team in NCAA college football this year. Offensively, one of those starters returning to the team just to have a chance at a three-peat is Crimson Tide quarterback, AJ McCarron.

With a revamped offensive line that features projected first-round NFL pick, Cyrus Kouandjio at left tackle, McCarron and Amari Cooper are sure to put up monsters numbers through the air. On the ground, another talented sophomore is sure to reap the benefits of the O-line, as running back T.J. Yeldon is due to have a career year.

On the other side of the football, defense is where this team shines, and this year is no different. Saban will enjoy having two of the very best linebackers in the country with C.J. Mosley and Adrian Hubbard.

So as you can see, USA Today Poll listing Alabama as the No.1 team in the NCAA football preseason coaches rankings is certainly justified.

Is there anyone that can anyone beat Bama this season, or are they simply destined for a three-peat by winning their fourth BCS National Title in five years?

Hats off to ?No coal? parade brigade | Letters

To the 85 people who marched with us in the parade on July 4th to raise public awareness regarding safe shipping in the San Juan Islands, we say ?Thank You!?

The much larger than expected turnout of concerned citizens ? together with a coal ship, ferry boat, oil spill, informative signs, and singing children ? had such an effect, that the judges deemed us ?Spectacular?.

To the 15 people who volunteered for the construction and transportation of the 32-foot cardboard coal ship, ?Accident Prone?, and the to-scale Washington State ferry, we also extend many thanks.

Together we truly can stop the permitting and construction of the Cherry Point coal export terminal near Bellingham. This terminal would allow gargantuan capesize-vessels to traverse through Haro and Rosario Straits, exponentially increasing the risk of an oil spill in our surrounding waters and threatening the very ecosystem that drives our county?s economy.

For anyone who wants more information on this subject, look for our ship at the San Juan County Fair.

On their return visit they were greeted by friends and family, the St Paul?s Players from Hook, and special guest Esmeralda, a binturong that lives at the park.

Mrs Williams, 47, a teaching assistant, said: ?I was completely lost for words, which is a highly unusual state of affairs for me.

"It was really lovely to revisit the places we went when we got married.

Iranians may have abducted Briton in Dubai - government source

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain is taking seriously allegations that a British-Iranian citizen who went missing in Dubai in June may have been kidnapped by "elements in Iran", a government source in London said on Saturday.

Abbas Yazdi was reported missing on June 25 and his wife Atena has told Dubai-based news website 7Days that she fears he may have been kidnapped by Iranian intelligence officers.

"We believe that allegations that elements in Iran might be responsible for Mr Yazdi's disappearance are plausible, and we are taking them very seriously," the source told Reuters.

The Foreign Office said it was in contact with the authorities in Dubai and in Iran about the case and was providing consular assistance to Yazdi's family.

"We have asked the Iranians for any information they have about Mr Yazdi's whereabouts," a spokeswoman said.

"We are very concerned about Mr Yazdi's welfare."

Foreign Secretary William Hague raised Yazdi's disappearance with his Iranian counterpart Ali Akbar Salehi during a telephone conversation on July 31.

Britain is among Western nations at odds with Iran over its nuclear programme and other issues. It shut its embassy in Tehran after what it called "an attack by government-sponsored militias" on the mission in November 2011. Iran's embassy in London was also closed.

The 7Days website cited Yazdi's wife as saying the 44-year-old trader and investor was a close childhood friend of the son of former Iranian President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani.

Atena Yazdi was quoted as saying that her husband had been detained in Iran in 1993 and held in solitary confinement by the intelligence service for six months. He had later travelled to London and obtained British citizenship, she said.

The couple had moved to Dubai 10 years ago, 7Days said.

The Foreign Office spokeswoman declined to comment on the details of the report or to release any details about Yazdi's background.

Martino pleased after home debut as Barca coach

Brazil Sun (IANS) Saturday 3rd August, 2013

As friendly games go, FC Barcelona's 8-0 win at home against Brazilian side Santos probably won't tell us too much about the Liga BBVA Champons' expectations for the future given that their rivals appeared to be in town to take in the tourist sights and earn some extra money, rather than play a serious game of football.

Nevertheless it allowed the close to sell-out crowd in the Camp Nou Friday night to enjoy watching their heroes play nearly the entire game in their rivals' half and also to enjoy the skills of Lionel Messi and Neymar, although the fact that the Brazilian came into the game as a halftime substitute meant the fans would only see them work together for 16 short minutes, reports Xinhua.

What the match did teach us, however, is that new coach, 'Tata' Martino is not going to change the 4-3-3 line up which has worked so well for Barca in recent seasons. Sergio Busquets will still be the midfield lynchpin with Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta creating some magic and moving the ball in front of him.

One subtle change, however, is the pressure Barca put on Santos, asphyxiating the Brazilian side with men pressing their defenders almost on the edge of their penalty area, forcing errors and helping to set up chance after chance.

WASHINGTON 9, ALASKA 2: Eastlake Little League of Sammamish, Wash. Scored three runs in each of the first two innings to defeat Abbott-O-Rabbit LL of Anchorage, Alaska in the Northwest Region tournament opener.

Jack Carper led off the bottom of the first with home run to right-center field for Eastlake LL (1-0 overall), which is making its first appearance in San Bernardino.

"In that inning we scored three runs so I probably boosted the rally," said Carper, who finished 2 for 4 and scored two runs.

"I think right out of the gate the guys are swinging the bat, they're very excited and they're ready to go," Washington manager Mel Jessee said.

Dalton Chandler, Washington's No. 2 hitter, followed with a single and scored on a double down the left field line by Will Armbruester, who advanced to third and scored on separate wild pitches

In the fourth, Washington's Jacob Dahlstrom hit a massive opposite-field home run that landed on top of the souvenir stand located on the other side of the right field fence. The 6-foot-1 right-hander finished 2 for 2 with three RBI.

Terren Sugita singled and scored and later walked for Abbott-O-Rabbit (0-1), which went 11-1 in district and state tournament

play coming into this week.

Jaret Godman, Nevada's No. 3 hitter, smashed a solo home run on the third pitch he saw to give Mountain Ridge LL (1-0 overall) an early lead.

The three-time defending Nevada state champions went on to score three runs in the second, one in the fourth, and six in the fifth - capped by an RBI sacrifice fly from Jacob Godman - to end the game by virtue of the mercy-rule.

"I think today - if there's an easy game - today was going to be the easy game," Nevada manager Larry Quancey said.

Nevada plays Southern California next, followed by Hawaii and Arizona.

Sean Lee struck out 14 of the 18 batters he faced and went 2 for 3 with a pair of RBIs to lead Belmont-Reedwood Shores Little League to a win in its opening game of pool play.

Northern California second baseman Noah Marcelo, who went 3 for 3 with two runs scored, broke a scoreless tie with a solo home run to begin a three-run third inning. Northern California pulled away with a four-run fourth inning that included a two-run home run by Brad Shimabuku and an RBI double by Lee.

Northern California won't play again until taking on Hawaii Sunday morning. Arizona will play Utah this morning.

Dick Kazmaier, Heisman winner who passed on NFL career, dies at 82

When Dick Kazmaier was given the opportunity to play football for a living, he decided he wanted to make real money instead. Thus the Princeton halfback and the 1951 Heisman Trophy recipient said no to an NFL career and yes to a business career.

Kazmaier chose wisely. He eventually built a successful financial planning and consulting firm with a focus on sports. He died Thursday at age 82 of heart and lung disease in Boston, according to The New York Times.

PHOTOS: Heisman Trophy winners | Notable sports deaths of 2013

Kazmaier's decision not to turn pro was a lot easier in '51 than it would be today. As the Times noted, NFL players made about $5,000 a year at the time. That was OK for seasonal work, but Kazmaier had bigger goals and the means to achieve them.

Besides, he once said (per the Times), "I had achieved everything I could achieve as an individual and as part of a team (at Princeton). I felt there was nowhere to go but down (in the NFL).?

He declined to sign with the Chicago Bears, who had drafted him, and went to Harvard for his master's degree, which he received in 1954. He then served three years as a Naval officer before ultimately moving into sports marketing and consulting. He founded Kazmaier Associates in 1975.

Kazmaier is one of 12 Heisman winners to have never played in an NFL regular season game after leaving college. The others: Jay Berwanger, Larry Kelley, Clint Frank, Nile Kinnick, Doc Blanchard, Pete Dawkins, Ernie Davis, Joe Bellino (played in the AFL), Charlie Ward, Eric Crouch and Jason White.

Junior India girls reach hockey World Cup semis

India advanced to the semifinal of the FIH Women's Hockey Junior World Cup with a 4-2 victory over Spain on Thursday.

In the quarterfinal match, Spain took an early lead through Xantal Gine when she converted a penalty corner in the seventh minute. India came back quickly and levelled the score three minutes later through Monika.

Spain skipper Bonastre Berta put them ahead again in the 30th minute but India retaliated and got back to level terms just at the stroke of half time with Navneet Kaur scoring in the 34th minute.

The second half belonged to India as they breezed to a 4-2 lead by the 48th minute with goals from Vandana Kataria and Rani and secured a last-four berth for the first time in the tournament.

This is India's best performance so far in this tournament, the previous best being ninth in 2001 and 2009.

Pope Francis drags church into the 21st century

VATICAN CITY // The Francis Revolution is underway. Not everyone is pleased.

Four months into his papacy, Francis has called on young Catholics in the trenches to take up spiritual arms and shake up a dusty, doctrinaire church that is losing faithful and relevance. He has said women must have a greater role - not as priests, but with a place in the church that recognises that Mary was more important than any of the apostles. And he has turned the Vatican upside down, quite possibly knocking the wind out of a poisonously homophobic culture by merely uttering the word "gay" and saying: "so what?"

In between, he has charmed millions of faithful and the mainstream news media, drawing the second-largest crowd to a papal Massin history. That should provide some insurance as he goes about doing what he was elected to do: reforming not just the dysfunctional Vatican bureaucracy but the church itself, using his own persona and personal history as a model.

"He is restoring credibility to Catholicism," said a church historian, Alberto Melloni.

But such enthusiasm is not shared across the board.

Francis's predecessor, Benedict XVI, had coddled traditionalist Catholics attached to the old Latin Mass and opposed to the modernising reforms of the Second Vatican Council. That group greeted Francis's election with concern - and now is watching its worst fears come true. Francis has spoken out both publicly and privately against such "restoratist groups," which he accuses of being navel-gazing retrogrades out of touch with the evangelising mission of the church in the 21st century.

His recent decision to forbid priests of a religious order from celebrating the old Latin Mass without explicit authorisation seemed to be abrogating one of the big initiatives of Benedict's papacy, a 2007 decree allowing broader use of the pre-Vatican II Latin liturgy for all who want it. The Vatican denied he was contradicting Benedict, but the restoratists see a threat in Francis's words and deeds. They are in something of a retreat.

"Be smart. There will be time in the future for people to sort what Vatican II means and what it doesn't mean," Rev John Zuhlsdorf warned his traditionalist readers in a recent blog post. "But mark my words: If you gripe about Vatican II right now, in this present environment, you could lose what you have attained."

Even some mainstream conservative Catholics are not thrilled with Francis.

In a recent interview with the National Catholic Reporter, the Philadelphia archbishop, Charles Chaput, said right-wing Catholics "generally have not been really happy" with Francis.

To be sure, Francis has not changed anything about church teaching. Nothing he has said or done is contrary to doctrine; everything he has said and done champions the Christian concepts of loving the sinner but not the sin and having a church that is compassionate, welcoming and merciful.

But tone and priorities can themselves constitute change, especially when considering issues that are not being emphasised, such as church doctrine on abortion, gay marriage and other issues frequently referenced by Benedict and his predecessor, Pope John Paul II.

The Vatican newspaper, L'Osser-vatore Romano, used the word "gay" for perhaps the first time in its 150-year history on Wednesday, in an article marvelling at the change Francis has brought.

"In just a few words, the novelty has been expressed clearly and without threatening the church's tradition," the newspaper said about Francis's comments on gays and women. "You can change everything without changing the basic rules, those on which Catholic tradition are based."

The biggest headline came in Francis's inflight news conference on the way home from Brazil this week, when he was asked about a trusted monsignor who reportedly once had a gay lover.

"Who am I to judge?" he asked, when it comes to the sexual orientation of priests, as long as they are searching for God and have good will.

Under normal circumstances, given the sexual morality at play in the Catholic Church, outing someone as actively gay is a death knell for career advancement.

Francis also made headlines with his call for the church to develop a new theology of women's role, saying it is not enough to have altar girls or a woman heading a Vatican department given the critical role that women have in helping the church grow.

While those comments topped the news from the 82-minute news conference, he revealed plenty of other insights that reinforce the idea that a very different papacy is under way.

He said the church's judicial system of annulling marriages must be "looked at again" because church tribunals simply are not up to the task. Many Catholics often have to wait years for an annulment, the process by which the church determines that a marriage effectively never took place.

And then there was Rio.

From the moment he touched down, it was clear change was afoot. No armoured popemobile, just a simple Fiat sedan - one that got swarmed by adoring fans when it got lost and stuck in traffic. Rather than recoil in fear, Francis rolled down his window. Given that popes until recently were carried around on a chair to keep them above the fray, that gesture alone was revolutionary.

"Either you do the trip as it needs to be done, or you don't do it at all," he was quoted as saying on Brazil's TV Globo. He said he simply could not have visited Rio "closed up in a glass box".
