Tinnitus - What Is It And How To Reduce It

Article Directory :: Health & Fitness Articles

There is a constant hissing or ringing sound that never stops. The ringing, hissing or swishing sound is called tinnitus and seems to be in the ears and certainly is in the head. The cause of it seems to be part of a hearing impairment process, which can be attributed to problems with the outer ear, the middle ear, the inner ear or even anomalies in the brain.

Although it is considered normal, in some cases, to have ringing in the ears is also very annoying. More than 35 million Americans would love to find a cure for this inner noise that is constant and increasingly apparent over time. Typically it is a symptom of another condition, which can eventually resolve. However, in some rare cases tinnitus could indicate a more serious problem.

Congestion from fluids, a foreign object or earwax can cause more awareness of the sound called tinnitus. If there is a middle ear infection, congestion from allergies, cold virus or similar causes, the sound of the ringing will increase.

If there is damage to the hair like nerve endings of the inner ear, there is tinnitus. Advanced hearing loss from aging with nerve impairment is also one of the tinnitus causes. Studies also attribute tinnitus to the results of loud noise exposure, resulting in hearing loss.

Those who work or expose themselves to loud noises often are advised to wear ear plugs or protect their ears from these sounds. Listening to loud music constantly can eventually result in ringing in the ears due to nerve damage and hearing loss.

It would be wonderful if there was a tinnitus treatment for ringing in the ears. Although there is not yet a complete cure for this sometimes annoying condition, there are methods to aid in coping with it. After a physician evaluates the condition, there are several options available depending on how mild or severe the case is.

Hearing aids are prescribed. There is counseling to help patients cope with the problem. This tinnitus treatment involves assisting patients learn how to think through the problem as well as how to react to the sounds. Another tinnitus treatment is a wearable sound generator which is fit to the ear and propagates a soft sound to mask the ringing.

If the ringing is annoying enough to cause problems in falling asleep, there are tabletop sound generators available to assist the patient in falling asleep through relaxation. The device can be set to produce rain fall sounds, waves on the shore, waterfall sounds and night time sounds of summer. These sounds will mask the ringing and allow sleep.

Niacin supplements have been found to help. Antidepressants and anti-anxiety drugs have also been prescribed for tinnitus treatment. There are also cochlear implants used for severe hearing loss and ringing in the ears.

In praise of the Tevatron

Tomorrow, the Tevatron particle accelerator at Fermilab will shut down. The end will be no song and dance: the accelerator operators will simply stop putting new protons and antiprotons into the machine. The last few particles will whiz around the accelerator until the number of collisions per second drops below a useful level, after which time the remaining particles will be diverted to a metal target. The process is the same as that used for annual maintenance shutdowns, but this time there will be no going back. By the end of December, the thousands of superconducting magnets that surround the accelerator tunnel will have been warmed up from their close-to-absolute-zero temperature before being removed, and the rest of the accelerator will have been cleared of gases and fluids, and dismantled. Its a rather understated end to 26 years of smashing particles together in the name of science.

From the placing of the first magnet to those final few collisions, the Tevatron has been a major engineering achievement and a source of plenty of new science for particle physicists to sink their teeth into. Even after the shutdown, scientists working on Fermilab?s CDF and DZero experiments will carry on analysing Tevatron data and in all likelihood will end up publishing at an even higher rate than they did when the accelerator was running, for a couple of years at least.

In honour of the shutdown, the nice people Fermilab have produced an interactive timeline of the Tevatron?s history. You can see the timeline here. And for a bit more detail on one of the most important discoveries made there, read on?

March 2, 1995

Just before the 10th anniversary of the first proton-antiproton collisions witnessed by the CDF collider detector, both the DZero and CDF experiments submitted papers to Physical Review Letters detailing their discovery of a new particle ? the top quark. The discovery was announced in seminars at Fermilab and a press release sent out on the same day.

Thinking that quarks should come in pairs, particle physicists had been hunting for the top quark since the discovery of its smaller partner, the bottom quark, at Fermilab in 1977. The CDF experiment saw hints of the top quark in 1994, but there wasn?t quite enough data to say for certain that it existed. Once more data had been collected and analysed, and the DZero experiment had conducted its own, independent investigation, a clear signal of the tops existence was found, allowing both groups to say for certain that they?d seen it.

The top quark is the heaviest fundamental particle we have ever observed, by a long way. It is 100,00 times heavier than the lightest quark ? the up quark ? and has about the same mass as a gold atom, though it is much smaller. Its mass is why it was the last quark to be discovered: the more massive a particle, the more energy is required to create it in a particle accelerator. Before the Large Hadron Collider, the Tevatron was the only accelerator in the world capable of reaching energies high enough to make the top quark.

To create a top quark, a proton and antiproton collide at nearly the speed of light. Sometimes, this results in the production of a top quark, which always comes with an antiquark. The pair don?t hang around for long, and within a fraction of second they both decay into lighter particles. A chain of decays often results in a burst of particles that physicists call jets. Finding the signature of a top quark in the vast amounts of data would be near impossible, given its short lifetime, so instead physicists look for its decay products. A top-antitop pair decay into two W bosons (force particles that mediate the weak nuclear force) and two bottom quarks (the top?s much lighter parter). In turn, one of the W bosons turns into a muon and neutrino pair and the other turns into an up and down quark pair. The up and down quarks then decay into jets, shortly followed by the bottom quarks that go the same way. So, the signature to look for when searching for top quarks is: one muon, one neutrino and four jets.

The CDF and DZero experiments had each seen approximately ten top-antitop quark pairs, which was enough for them to be sure that the events were not just something that looked like top quarks, but the real thing.

In the years after the discovery, scientists at Tevatron have been able to determine the top quark mass to high precision. This has not only helped to reinforce our knowledge of the standard model of particle physics, but also refine our ideas about the Higgs boson ? the only particle in the standard model that has yet to be found. Now that the Tevatron is shutting down, it will be up to the LHC to continue the hunt for the Higgs.

Bilbao looking for Europa League win against PSG

By PAUL LOGOTHETIS

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 9:48 a.m. ET Sept. 28, 2011

LONDON (AP) -Atletico Bilbao coach Marcelo Bielsa will be trying to get his team back to its winning form against Paris Saint-Germain in the Europa League on Thursday, and Irish club Shamrock Rovers will play its first competitive match in England in more than 50 years at Tottenham.

Both Rovers and Spurs are winless in Group A, while Bilbao's lone victory in seven games under Bielsa this season was a 3-1 victory over Slovan Bratislava to open Group F. PSG is at the top of the French standings and unbeaten in 10 matches, with eight victories.

The Argentine coach is already under pressure to turn around a young squad brimming with talent and expected to challenge for a Champions League place next season. Bilbao sits near the bottom of the Spanish standings with two points from five games.

"Nobody likes where we are but you've got two options: hide away and feel depressed or get motivated by it," Bilbao midfielder Javi Martinez said. "Many people are motivated by adversity, including myself and many in the team who are feeling the same way."

A new-look PSG continued to impress with Saturday's 3-0 win over Montpellier. It hasn't lost since an opening-day defeat and beat Salzburg 3-0 in its opening Europa League game.

Shamrock Rovers' last visit to England was during the 1957-58 season to face a Manchester United team made up of the Busby Babes, many of whom would die in an air crash in Munich later that season. If this visit results in a second straight group defeat - it lost 3-0 to Rubin Kazan - Shamrock will be in a tough spot in Group F. Tottenham drew against PAOK in its first game but has recently found its form domestically, sitting sixth in the Premier League.

England winger Aaron Lennon has recovered from a groin injury and is set to start at White Hart Lane, while Danny Rose (knee) and Steven Pienaar (groin) could also return for Tottenham.

"We've (got) a stronger, more experienced team tomorrow and a chance to play some of the lads who didn't play at the weekend," manager Harry Redknapp said on Wednesday.

Schalke coach Huub Stevens makes his debut against Maccabi Haifa in Group J after Ralf Rangnick stepped down on Tuesday because of burnout.

Schalke, which opened with a draw against Steaua Bucharest, is waiting to see if striker Raul Gonzalez, who hurt his ankle in training this week, will be able to play. Haifa is top of the group after opening with a 1-0 win over AEK Larnaca, which plays Steaua.

Lazio plays at Group D leader Sporting Lisbon while fellow Serie A club Udinese will go to Celtic without striker Antonio Di Natale.

The Italy striker, who has led Serie A in scoring the past two seasons, is not traveling to Glasgow for the Group I match because the club wants him to rest for upcoming league matches. Atletico Madrid plays Rennes in the other group game.

The top two in each of the 12 groups will advance to the knockout phase along with the eight third-place teams from the Champions League groups.

DNA detectives aim to thwart illegal timber trade

A technique originally used to piece together the DNA of extinct animals lies at the heart of a powerful new technology for tackling the $23 billion trade in illegal timber.

A lot of timber sold with the famous Forest Stewardship Council sustainability logo breaks the FSC's rules, warns the Center for International Forestry Research, based in Bogor, Indonesia. DNA might offer a better way to establish the source of wood.

"Tree DNA is still present in tables, chairs, floors, decking and even guitars ? but as the wood has been kiln-dried and treated with chemicals, the DNA is like a messed-up jigsaw puzzle," says Andrew Lowe, chief scientific officer of DoubleHelix in Singapore. Like fragmented DNA from mammoths and other animals trapped in permafrost, however, wood DNA can now be reconstructed. "Companies can prove the origin of their finished wood products, helping eliminate fraud," he says.

Calling DNA "nature's barcode", DoubleHelix aims to set up genetic checkpoints where timber source paperwork can be verified throughout the supply chain. DNA databases will allow the timber's true origin to be pinpointed with ever-greater accuracy.

Timber traces

At an international forestry conference in Pointe-Noire, Republic of Congo, this week, the company ? together with the International Timber Trade Organization (ITTO) ? will unveil a genetic map of commercially logged tree species from the Congo river basin. The map will allow the DNA of timber traded from the region to be cross-checked against customs declarations.

The technique could be used to stop illegal wood products entering western markets. US law was amended in 2008 to impose stringent penalties for illegally trading timber, and similar legislation is due to come into force in Europe in 2013.

DoubleHelix's DNA fingerprinting has already successfully matched genetic samples from felled tree stumps with processed wood leaving a sawmill. For degraded or fragmented DNA, a technique called polymerase chain reaction allows multiple copies to be made, which a computer can then match against a template of the sequenced genome for the tree species.

Checking corruption

Some forestry campaigners are enthusiastic. "DNA technology has the potential to play an important role in curbing illegal logging and the illicit trade in stolen timber," says Julian Newman, campaigns director of the Environmental Investigation Agency in London.

Others are more cautious. "This sounds like a positive development," says Fiona Napier, associate director of London-based environmental and human rights campaigning body Global Witness, which has worked against illegal logging. "But it is worth remembering that any tracking system is only as good as the people running it. You need to tackle corruption and bad governance to prevent forest destruction rather than simply relying on technical solutions."

It's not all bad news in the world's woodlands. The area of tropical forests that is sustainably managed is on the rise, according to a recent report by the ITTO.

Animal Update: Hospice Foster Care ? CBS San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) ? Foster care is an integral part of the shelter system, a topic KCBS? Jeff Bell discusses with Dr. Jack Aldridge, Director of Veterinary Services at the San Francisco SPCA.

Aldridge said that when an animal comes to them either too young or not healthy enough to be immediately adopted, foster volunteers nurse the animals back to health in their homes. This opens up more than a thousand spaces in the shelter every year for animals who are immediately available for adoption.

Animal Update: Hospice Foster Care

He said they especially rely on volunteers during ?kitten season,? which is May-October, when the shelter receives an influx of kittens too young to be immediately adopted.

The SPCA also has a foster hospice program called ?Fospice,? which is a program that allows volunteers to open their homes to animals diagnosed with terminal illness. They can live out their final days in a loving home. All food and medical costs are covered by the San Francisco SPCA and volunteers work closely with shelter staff to ensure the animal?s comfort and well-being.

Older cats make up the majority of Fospice patients, although there are dogs in the program as well. And while it can be emotionally challenging to take home a terminally ill animal, Fospice parents said they find helping these animals live out their lives in comfort and dignity is extremely rewarding.

Dr. Aldridge said that if you are interested in taking part in fostering, all foster parents receive comprehensive training to prepare them for the experience as well as support from the SF SPCA. The organization also provides resources such as food, veterinary care and a Foster Care Hotline.

Animal Update airs on KCBS All News 740AM and 106.9FM on Sundays at 1:35 p.m., 3:35 p.m., and 9:21 p.m.

Managing: How to Cut Your Business Costs With Outsourcing

    By Rieva Lesonsky
    September 27, 2011

    Courtesy Photos.com

Are you trying to do more with less these days?less money, less time and fewer employees? I think most business owners are in that boat. If you?re looking for ways to decrease the cost of running your business (or cut the costs of starting one), you should be thinking about outsourcing.

Many small business owners think outsourcing is something only huge corporations do, and that it always involves overseas subcontractors. Well, it can?but it?s not just for big businesses. My company has been outsourcing everything from website design to editing to payroll since we first got into business. It?s what?s enabled us to survive and keep operating lean?and we have used everything from neighborhood freelancers to, yep, Indian Web coders. But before you jump into outsourcing, here are a few things you should know.

To get started, determine what you need to get done and what your criteria are for the person or company who will do it. What kinds of experience and skills are needed? What is your price range? Is this a regular gig, or a one-time deal?

Next, consider logistics. Does the company or individual you outsource to need to be close by? Perhaps you need to physically meet with the person from time to time. Or maybe everything can be done online, via phone calls, emails and videoconferencing. Products like Skype and GoToMeeting make this easy and affordable for even the smallest businesses.

Where can you find companies or individuals to outsource to? Referrals from people you know and your social networking contacts are a good starting point. There are also plenty of websites like oDesk.com, Elance.com and Guru.com where you can hire people to do everything from website coding to writing ad copy.

Don?t skip this next step: Investigate the person or company as thoroughly as you would any supplier. It?s crucial to make sure they will provide work that?s up to your standards and won?t drop the ball. Ask for references and check them.

Be sure you?ve got a good contract in place and that deliverables, payment terms, deadlines and schedules are clearly spelled out. Also check with your accountant to make sure you?re not running afoul of any laws related to independent contractors (this can leave you open to major IRS fines).

Once you?ve got your outsourcing solutions in place, stay in touch regularly so you?re on top of all projects. Weekly or monthly calls with these vendors can help ensure everyone?s on the same page and that they feel part of the team?which is crucial to keeping them engaged and productive.

Your SCORE mentor can help you assess whether outsourcing is a good solution for your business. Don?t have a mentor? Visit the SCORE website to get matched with a mentor for free advice 24/7.

One Gaza family celebrates Palestinian statehood bid despite Hamas ban

One Gazan couple named their daughter after the month during which Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas presented his request for Palestinian statehood to the United Nations.

When Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas went to the United Nations to ask for recognition of a Palestinian state Friday, Gaza residents weren?t allowed to celebrate in the streets like Palestinians in the West Bank.

Yet one Gazan family found its own way to celebrate. They named their newborn daughter after the occasion. Ayloul Abu Asser was born Sept. 21, as the UN General Assembly was preparing for Mr. Abbas?s request. It was also the same day that Gaza?s Hamas government, a political rival of Mr. Abbas?s Fatah faction, announced that public celebrations of the statehood bid were forbidden.

That didn?t stop Hamad Nasr Abu Asser and Reda Abu Asser from naming their daughter after the month during which Abbas presented his request. Ayloul is the Arabic name for September.

?Hamas prevented any action in the street, so we decided to celebrate in our own way,? says Hamad, Ayloul?s father. The couple supports Fatah, and are were hopeful that Abbas?s speech may bring their dream of statehood closer.

And their daughter?s unusual name is not just a celebration of the occasion, but also a reminder. They hope that Ayloul will be able to grow up in an independent Palestinian state. But if that doesn?t happen, she will keep the dream alive for the next generation.

?If we don?t establish a state, her generation will carry on the project,? says Reda, Ayloul?s mother. Her baby is wrapped in a Palestinian kuffeiyah, and wears a headband in the black, white, and green of the Palestinian flag.

?One day she will ask why her name is Ayloul,? says her father. ?So the movement will go on with her.?

Ayloul is the fifth child for Hamad and Reda. Relatives and family were surprised by the name they picked, but support them wholeheartedly.

On the night that Abbas delivered his request to the UN, the couple invited friends and family to their modest home in the Shejaeya neighborhood of Gaza City to celebrate with two-day-old Ayloul. Gazan families often celebrate by slaughtering a sheep when a boy is born. A girl doesn?t usually merit such celebration. But for Ayloul, the family slaughtered two sheep and feasted with the family.

Nine Myths about Aspergers | Special Education & IEP Advisor

Asperger?s Syndrome is a condition of the brain and nerves, usually in place by birth, that affects how a person sees the world, processes information, and interacts with other people. Because those with AS act differently and since society has mechanisms for maintaining social norms, those with Aspergers are misunderstood, labeled, and rejected by society. If society would instead embrace our different brain types and variety of nervous systems, both those with AS and society at-large would benefit. In fact, Thom Hartmann points out that it is precisely those who are wired differently that have saved some civilizations in the past and it is those same types who will save our own civilization in the future ? if we strive to accept them and understand what they see.

Myths of Science. Science is the great purveyor of truth. It is science that has brought us machines, electronics, and modern medicine. However, in every era, science proclaims its theories as infallible. At one point scientists declared the earth the center of our solar system, encouraged the bleeding of evil spirits from George Washington, dropped a planet from the official list, and every decade or so reclassified human disabilities. If science was always accurate and less dogmatic, it would not change its positions under duress.

Myths of Culture. Like science, the aggregate of humanity that we call civilization or society imposes its expectations on us in the form of culture. Like science, society measures what appears to be the average in all areas and declares it to be desirable. Unfortunately, the norm for a small group is not normal for the world. What is average today may merely be a fad gone tomorrow. Science and society have promoted oft-repeated myths about autism and Asperger?s syndrome to the point that these myths have become broadly accepted. The following is a small sample.

Myth 1: Autism and Aspergers are two names for the same thing.

Myth 2: We do not know what causes autism.

Myth 3: Autism and Aspergers can and should be cured.

Myth 4: Those with autism and Aspergers have normal nerves.

Myth 5: Autism is five disorders.

Myth 6: It is unclear if those with autism or Aspergers are biologically different.

Myth 7: Autism and Aspergers occur during early childhood.

Myth 8: Those ?on the spectrum? are inferior and defective human beings.

Myth 9: Those who have not been diagnosed with autism do not have it.

The truths about each of these myths have been clearly established, but are not as popularly and widely spread as are the myths. It has, therefore, become my mission in life to spread the truth, first among those who now care about these conditions, and finally to society and the scientific community.

Fact 1: Autism and Aspergers are not two names for the same thing. There are many forms of autism and many forms of Aspergers. Gene mapping, fMRI scans, and other new technologies are pointing this out. However, the current definitions for these ?disorders,? which I call neurological variances, are simply wrong. They are not founded on hard genetic, anatomical, physiological traits, but rather on the soft science of behavior, known as psychology. The hard sciences and soft sciences now find themselves in contradiction. Hard science argues for an increased number of categories while the soft sciences are trying to consolidate labels for clinical convenience and practicality.

Fact 2: We do know what causes autism. Genes cause it. A certain combination of gene ?codes? being switched on or off create most cases of autism and Aspergers by the seventh week of pregnancy or earlier. Other combinations lead to other forms of autism or Aspergers. Autism is not really a spectrum disorder; it is a combination of many closely related gene codes that manifest as different types of autism, Aspergers, PDD, Retts, AD(H)D, epilepsy, and other conditions.

Fact 3: Autism and Aspergers cannot and should not be cured. First of all, short of a complete brain transplant and completely rewiring all the nerves in the body, there is no true ?cure? for these conditions. They are not cancers needing to be cured. They are simply different ways that we are wired before birth, like AC (power cord) versus DC (battery) power, or parallel-wired Christmas lights versus series-wired lights. Each has its own function; none are completely better or worse than the other. Our lives are better because we have all those options. Therefore, it is both impossible and undesirable to cure autism and Aspergers. Instead, we should look for ways to better understand those with it and how to assimilate them naturally into our neurotypical society.

Fact 4: Those with autism and Aspergers have unusual nerves. Both those with autism and those with Aspergers have nerves that look different than the average person. In some parts of the brain, these nerves are thinner and more tightly packed together. In Aspergers, they form a distinctive web or grid of nerves that is highly efficient for concentrating on one task or subject for a prolonged period of time. However, for both autism and Aspergers, the large number of branches required for processing multiple social communication skills is absent. Those on the spectrum have brains that grow faster than typical and then stop growing sooner than most. Also, different parts of the brain are larger or smaller than average, because their genetic blueprints have told their brains to grow parts differently than the average person. Those with autism and Aspergers are different from average people anatomically, neurologically, genetically, and physiologically. With new technologies, we can see the differences.

Fact 5: Autism is more than five disorders. What a layperson calls autism is called PDD by psychologists. The DSM-IV, published by the American Psychological Association, lists only five disorders under that ?umbrella? heading, including Aspergers and (classic) autism. It is past time to update this system of classification and definitions to reflect modern science. While it is easier and more convenient to combine and eliminate labels from the Diagnostic Manuel, it should actually be expanded into more forms of autism, Aspergers, and related neurological variances. Again, these are not accurately called ?disorders? or ?disabilities,? although that is how most people and professionals refer to them. These terms need to go the way of ?handicapped? and ?retarded? ? into the trashcan.

Fact 6: It is clear that those with autism and those with Aspergers are biologically different than average people. Those with autism and Aspergers are different from average people anatomically, neurologically, genetically, and physiologically. Those with Aspergers are generally hypercompliant. That is to say that they try very hard to do what they are told to do. That is part of their wiring. Teaching them the same way as other students and telling them to ?try harder? is futile and ludicrous.

Fact 7: Autism and Aspergers occur in the womb. While adult-onset spectrum disorders have not been ruled out, all or nearly all of those with autism and Aspergers were born that way. Because most children are not diagnosed until age three, society and professionals often assume that age three is the time that someone ?gets? autism. Prenatal and childhood environmental factors, including toxins, play a role in altering the off-on status of some genes required to produce a specific form of PDD. However, if the genes were programmed to develop a typical brain during the nine months in the womb, there are no known triggers for causing autism or Asperger?s after birth.

Fact 8: Those ?on the spectrum? are not inferior or defective human beings. Society tends to embrace its norm-of-the-moment, and tolerates clear physical disabilities (blindness, deafness, those in wheelchairs) with great pride. However, those with ?invisible disabilities? are often subject to ridicule, exclusion, neglect, and abuse. Many students with intellectual disability (formerly called mental retardation) are some of the most accepting and loving individuals I have encountered as a group. Those with autism and Aspergers are often gifted with ability to see the world in novel and creative ways. That is an essential, if not superior, aspect of their neurology. They, too, are human.

Fact 9: Those who have not been diagnosed with autism or Aspergers may still have it. Many of us walking around now as parents and grandparents have had all the symptoms of spectrum neurology all our lives. When we were children, there were no definitions in the dictionary for autism or Aspergers syndrome. Adults and other children used other names to describe us ? geek, nerd, retard, and others that are not worth publishing. Autism (PDD) did not just spring on scene in the last two decades after six thousand years of recorded human history. It has always been with us to some degree. Those of us who have it as adults can advocate for those who are in the upcoming generations with it, so that they can contribute in better ways to society than we were able to ? both for their sake, and for ours. Research shows that two-thirds of those living in the USA will admit to having either a disability or mental disorder at some time in their lives. The other third are probably in denial, and crazy. I have yet to meet the ?normal? person, and that?s a good thing.
