Emmy Nominations 2011

Nominations for the 63rd Primetime Emmys were announced Thursday morning in Los Angeles -- and it was a happy day for a hilarious Modern Family, some chain-smoking Mad Men and those who rule over Boardwalk Empire.

AMC's Mad Men scored the most nominations of any TV series with 19 nods, including a nomination for outstanding drama (which it won last year), outstanding actor for Jon Hamm and outstanding actress for Elisabeth Moss. Hot on its heels was HBO's critically acclaimed Depression-era drama Boardwalk Empire, grabbing 18 nods, including outstanding drama and outstanding actor for leading man Steve Buscemi. HBO's epic new series Game of Thrones also racked up a nomination for outstanding drama, while the network's Mildred Pierce miniseries, starring Kate Winslet in the title role, was the most-honored program with 21 overall nods.

On the comedy tip of things, ABC's Modern Family utterly dominated the competition with 17 nominations -- including two for outstanding supporting actress (for both Julie Bowen and Sofia Vergara) and a whopping four nods in the outstanding supporting actor category for Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Ed O'Neill, Ty Burrell and last year's Emmy winner Eric Stonestreet.

FOX's musical comedy Glee also fared well, collecting nominations for outstanding comedy, outstanding supporting actor for Chris Colfer and supporting actress for this year's Emmys host Jane Lynch, who won that category last year. Gwyneth Paltrow, Kristen Chenoweth and Dot-Marie Jones also snagged outstanding guest actress noms for their stints on Glee -- though the show's leading lady Lea Michele was nowhere to be found among the nominees (snub!).

Finally, in welcome news, Steve Carell, who this year ended his tenure as idiot-boss-with-a-heart-of-gold Michael Scott on The Office, will vie for outstanding actor in a comedy. That's huge! (And, yes, that's what she said!)
