Mountain biking trails for Rostrevor and Castlewellan welcomed ...

Sinn F?in MLA Chris Hazzard has welcomed the announcement that construction is due to commence on mountain biking tails in Castlewellan and Rostrevor Forest Parks.

Speaking to Newry Times, Mr. Hazzard MLA said, ?This project will see the development of both parks as a short break destination for Mountain Biking with trails that can facilitate competitive sports and outdoor recreation. The project was initiated by the Countryside Access and Activities Network and their persistence above else was the main driving force in making an idea become reality.??

Hazzard stated his belief that when completed, these trails will give a vital boost to the local tourism and hospitality industry in South Down and in particular to Castlewellan and Rostrevor. ?Mountain biking tourism is worth over ?100 million annually to the Scottish economy and with this being the only venue of its kind in the north, we can now begin to compete for those visitors. Funding from the Tourist Board, Sport NI and both Down and Newry & Mourne Councils demonstrates a confidence in this project. I have every confidence that this will help retain local employment and encourage private sector investment that will enhance the overall tourism product.?

?I am aware that Government departments are considering further proposals for a recreation strategy throughout our forest parks and look forward to working with groups who wish to develop these plans,? he added.
