Wellness Concierge creates personalized wellness ... - Article Details

Tom Hays? lifestyle change was as simple of looking in the mirror. Following his wife?s recovery from cancer using Holistic medicine practices, Hays? doctor took him aside and said: ?Your wife is getting better and you?re not.?
?
Understand that at the time Hays, the Wellness Concierge for The Ritz-Carlton Destination Club in Vail, Colo., was a professional chef who looked the part.
?
?Big and chubby,? he said. ?I worked for the Orient Express Hotel Co. and traveled the world quite a bit. I met and married my wife in Switzerland.?
?
It wasn?t long after their marriage that Hays? wife was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 30 and embarked on a holistic means of recovery.
?
?During that time I kind of witnessed a transformation of her getting better and healthier,? said Hays, who soon decided to leave the kitchen for the gym. He studied and trained to become a personal trainer.
?
?I basically became my own first client,? Hays said. ?I lost 60 pounds in the process. One day I looked up the mountain and saw The Ritz-Carlton, Bachelor Gulch, saw the spa and told them ?You need to have to have a nutritionist on the spa,? and they gave me a shot.?

Hays worked at Bachelor Gulch club for six years before moving to the nearby club in Vail this past December. The Vail, club, however, is only his headquarters. As Wellness Concierge for The Ritz-Carlton Destination Club, Hays travels to many of club locations helping members with their fitness and nutrition needs and also helping attract new members by showing them a personalized program of wellness services combining spa, fitness and culinary aspects in an effort to have a positive impact upon their personal well-being.

That program could include anything from special dietary needs to specific spa treatments to hiking the Vail Valley in the summer and taking snow shoe excursions in the winter.
?
?We recently had two families here in Vail considering memberships,? Hays said. ?I met with both families and made a huge impact on what we?re able to provide as far as fitness and health and wellness opportunities.?

In most cases, Hays said, most health-conscious members aren?t looking to stray too far from the lifestyle they enjoy at home.
?
?We have a pretty healthy membership here,? in Vail, Hays said. ?Generally speaking, people like to live a healthy lifestyle at home. When they go on vacation they don?t necessarily want to leave that behind. They might have food allergies or dietary restrictions they can?t just walk away from when they go on vacation, so we interact with our culinary staff, for example, to say, ?We need to have to gluten-free options available upon this person?s arrival.? Or when you get here, on even pre-arrival, we ask what kind of exercise routine you?re working on with your personal trainer and how can we continue that here?
?
?We?re welcoming them home when they come here. We want to provide them with as much support as possible in their health and well-being while they?re here.?
