As of the present day, Iowa generates nearly 4400 megawatts of electricity per year, which is enough to power 20% of the entire state! What?s more, the wind energy industry in Iowa has also generated nearly five billion dollars in investments; making it one of the fastest growing industries in the Midwest.

Wind farms in Iowa are mainly concentrated to the northern and western parts of the state. This is due to the direction and force of the wind paths that blow over the state. These upper-level wind paths also flow over other parts of the country as well, but because of Iowa?s flat terrain and sweeping farmlands, they tend to blow more strongly without obstructions.

Iowa wind energy development affects more than just those people who live in Iowa.

Because the state has become such a leader in wind energy production, the energy generated by Iowa wind farms is now being outsourced to other states nearby. Wisconsin and Illinois are currently benefactors of green energy being sold to them from Iowa.

Iowa has plans to expand its wind energy coverage to southern and more eastern parts of the state in order to bring clean, sustainable wind energy to people in those areas. By 2015, the state hopes to be the number one source of sustainable wind energy in North America: with up to 50% of all energy generated coming from wind power.
