UFC bantamweight champ Dominick Cruz is out of his UFC 148 bout with Urijah Faber. UFC president Dana White announced the bad news via Twitter on Monday afternoon. The exact circumstances of the injury and a timeline for recovery have not been revealed.
Cruz tweeted his disappointment.
"Im bummed people,Thanx 4 the support as i battle this, big sorry to all the fans out there!I WILL recover n I WILL b back 2put on a show!"
Cruz is currently coaching against Faber on "The Ultimate Fighter."Their July 7 bout was to be a rubber match after Faber won their 2007 bout at featherweight and Cruz took the 2011 bantamweight bout. After facing off as coaches on TUF, the bout was supposed to decide a rivalry that's been brewing for years.
Their bout was also the original main event for UFC 148 until Chael Sonnen and Anderson Silva's fight was moved to Las Vegas from Brazil. Even without Cruz/Faber, UFC 148 still is poised to be one of the best cards of the year. Sonnen/Silva, Forrest Griffin's rubber match with Tito Ortiz, and Rich Franklin vs. Cung Le gives the card plenty of star power.
