From The Bedford Journal?..
According to the Center of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), childhood obesity in the U.S. has more than tripled in the past 30 years, and more than one-third of children are overweight or obese.
Key to preventing obesity ? and avoiding the related health complications ? is teaching kids to eat a variety of healthy foods and get at least 30 minutes of activity each day.
For this last goal, Bedford residents have a great resource at their fingertips: Bedford Parks and Recreation Department.
During the summer, the department offers a plethora of activities to help kids get up and moving, including swimming at Bedford Memorial Pool, summer camps and a Jr. Olympics. Have a child that has a particular interest? The recreation department offers sports camps in tennis soccer, football baskestball and skateboarding for ages 3-11, as well as archery classes and tennis lessons.
These activities not only can help children stay healthier for the rest of their lives, but can also introduce them to new friends and new skills.
And, of course, parents should set a good example for their little ones and get moving. The recreation department offers plenty of opportunities for adults, including ultimate frisbee, line dancing classes and Zumba. Remember, parenting would be a lot easier if children did as we said, rather than as we do.
