If ABC thinks Family Tools is a hopeful replacement for their beloved Home Improvement franchise, they?re in for a big surprise.
Based on the British show White Man Van, the story follows Jack Shea (Kyle Bornheimer, Bachelorette), a hapless optimistic guy who?s kicked out of seminary school and returns home to take over the family fix-it business while his dad (J. K. Simmons, Will Pope on The Closer) recovers from a heart attack. Everyone wants Jack to fail, even his dad, but Jack is determined to make it work. There?s a firecracker-loving nephew in there as comic relief, but he does nothing to relieve the comedy.
Even with a well known cast that includes Simmons, Leah Remini (The King of Queens) and a cameo by Adam Arkin, the show should be put out of its misery well before it starts. Even with the likeable Bornheimer, the show is neither funny nor amusing. I didn?t laugh once. Slated as a midseason replacement, one can only hope the show never sees the light of day.
Look for Family Tools to premiere in 2013.
