Keystone Builds Affordable Green Homes | Atlanta Real Estate Forum

green building techniquesKeystone Homes is known for building top-quality, affordable homes in Georgia and South Carolina. Did you know that we also build homes that are environmentally-friendly?

One way we help homeowners save energy is through the use of Thermostat? radiant barrier roof sheathing. This roof sheathing is made with high-quality plywood or OSB and lowers peak attic temperatures up to 30 degrees, which is especially important in the South. Cooler temperatures in the attic help keep the rest of the house cooler during the summer. This results in less work for your air conditioning system.

To keep moisture out of your new home, we use house wrap and OSB (oriented strand board). House wrap helps prevent water condensation and mold from getting into the studs or wall cavity. OSB is considered a green building material because it can be made from smaller-diameter trees, such as poplars, that are often farmed. Other materials like traditional plywood often require larger-diameter trees from old-growth forests. We also use manufactured floor beams, which use less wood and are made from several different pieces.

To keep your home energy-efficient, every Keystone home is tightly constructed to reduce drafts, noise and moisture. Caulking and sealing around windows, doors and baseboards helps reduce wasted energy. Tight home construction also keeps dust, pollen, car exhaust and insects out of your home.

Other green building methods that we employ include the use of MPI (Master Painters Institute) green performance standard paint; low-emission ENERGY STAR-rated windows with .35 UV rating; insulation that meets the 2004 IRC standards of R-30 for ceiling and R-13 in the walls; 13 SEER A/C units; digital thermostats; ENERGY STAR dishwashers and water heaters; and recyclable Shaw carpeting.

These environmentally-friendly materials and techniques can help you save money on monthly utility bills. Many of the things found in a new Keystone home cannot be found in an older home, which is just one of the advantages of buying new.
