Supporters of the burgeoning arts and culture scene in South Florida are worried about the impact of proposed mega casinos. Many developers and supporters of the arts fear that casinos would change the image of Miami and undermine the industry?if?many residents?began spending their time and money in casinos, which draw gamblers in part with live entertainment as well as bars and restaurants designed to keep customers on site.
Developer Tony Goldman summed up the impact this way: ?Gambling sucks the life out of communities. Miami has such immense value that has been developed over the last 25 years ? we?ve developed a multi-culture,? said Goldman, who also redeveloped a swath of 13th Street in Philadelphia.
Between Goldman and Braman (see post below), it is like old home week for Philly readers. Too bad these guys weren?t still on the scene when Pennsylvania rammed through its legislation legalizing casinos.
