China is Fastest-Growing Android and iOS Market [REPORT]

A new report reveals that China is the fastest-growing market for smartphones worldwide.

The country leads with an astonishing 401% year-over-year growth between this and last July, demonstrating the power of its growing middle class and vast population of more than 1.3 billion people, the report said. Other emerging economies such as Brazil, Russia and India were also among the top-10 fastest-growing markets.

Compiled by mobile analytics firm Flurry, the report uses data from more than 200,000 apps that it tracks, running on more than 640 million devices worldwide.

Although the U.S. tops the list of countries with the highest number of active iOS and Android devices, China is "dramatically closing the gap," according to the report. In July, the U.S. had 165 million active users, whereas China had 128 million. But while net active devices in the U.S. grew by 30 million year-over-year, China saw more than 100 million new devices added. If this trajectory continues, the Asian nation's active install base could overtake the U.S. as early as December 2012, the report said.

The United Kingdom came in a distant third place with 31 million devices, followed by South Korea at 28 million, and Japan rounding out the top five with 22 million.

The report also measured which markets were nearing saturation by comparing the number of active devices in each country to its adult population (between ages 15 and 64). Singapore emerged on top with 92%, followed by Hong Kong with 87% and Sweden close behind at 86%.
