The YWCA?s Tribute to Women of Influence (TWIN)?event honors women who have made significant contributions to their fields, and recognizes?those organizations?that support such achievements. 2012 marks the 21th anniversary of TWIN. Leading up to this year?s September 20th event at Pack Place & Diana Wortham Theatre, we will highlight each of our 20 incredible?TWIN Honorees. Irene Jurczyk
Irene is an untiring advocate for better care and equality for persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities. She focuses on state and national level initiatives for better training and education for physicians, care providers, patients, and families. Irene knows that we are better than our social, political, and healthcare systems allow us to be in caring for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and she seeks to make lasting improvements in their quality of life and quality of care.
Since 2005, Irene has attained $755,000 in grant funds for MAHEC to establish a Mini-fellowship in Adult Developmental Medline, which has trained over 40 physicians in this field. The focus is on transitioning youth with special health care needs from a pediatric provider to adult care. Irene has also created enduring resources for professionals serving the disabled. These include completing a statewide website with provider toolkits, web-based learning modules, a national curriculum in development medicine that was modeled at medical schools and training programs in NC.
